EPIC
The word "epic" has its origins in ancient Greek. It is derived from the Greek word "epikos," which means "narrative" or "story." In ancient Greece, an epic was a long narrative poem that told the heroic adventures of legendary figures. Over time, the term "epic" has evolved to refer to any grand, heroic, or monumental story or event, regardless of its poetic form.
Knowing this, it’s easy to see why sports are held in such high regard among our culture. Sports, or sporting events, often generate some of the most memorable epic moments. Sports inherently possess the ability to create captivating moments that resonate with people on a global scale. For instance, go back to the legendary moment that took place in Game 3 of the 2001 World Series.
The world had come to a standstill on September 11, 2001, due to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, which had caused widespread fear and anxiety throughout the nation. This unprecedented event led to the suspension of all Major League Baseball games. However, one month later, the World Series took place in New York City. What happened in Game 3 impacted our entire nation.
The atmosphere was filled with worry, fear, and concern as the game approached. In a remarkable display of leadership and unity, President George W. Bush, despite personal safety concerns, donned a bulletproof vest and stood in the middle of Yankee Stadium in the heart of the Bronx to throw out the first pitch. This act became a symbol of resilience and unity that sent a powerful message to our nation and its adversaries. It was an EPIC moment in every sense of the word.
But why? Why do moments like this resonate with the human heart so much? Because typically, these moments reflect an infinitely greater narrative. One in which we were created to take part.
The Gospel is THE epic narrative that each human heart longs for so much. We keep searching for legendary figures because we were created by THE legendary figure, God. In one EPIC moment, in one selfless act of love, Jesus changed eternity for all of mankind.
This week at camp, your child will get front row seats to witness the EPIC story of Jesus and his ultimate act of love while growing their athletic giftings. It’s truly going to be an EPIC week, and we can’t wait. Thank you for the opportunity to minister to your child this week. We pray God will do big things while they are at camp!
